Translation and interpreting
Integrate your undergraduate and postgraduate studies into one course, graduating with an Integrated Masters in Modern Languages in four years.

You specialise in at least two modern languages, studying one to our highest Mastery level. Language study is combined from the third year with translation, interpreting and subtitling skills.

We have state-of-the-art facilities including an interpreting lab which gives you the tools to become an expert in conference interpreting. We have an Autonomous learning lab where you can practice your interpreting and subtitling skills and use translation software on your own as well as simultaneous interpreting booths which will allow you to interpret live conferences and lectures of up to 350 people.

Georgiana's story

"Essex is the only university that offers translation, interpreting and subtitling all in one course; usually you have to pick one. I really enjoyed studying them in my undergraduate degree, and I didn’t want to limit myself at this point in my career. It’s better to have all the options now, rather than regretting that I wasn’t able to do them all. Later, I can specialise."
