Graduating this year and returning for Summer reassessment

Congratulations, you have met the requirements to be awarded your full honours degree, however, you have also been offered the opportunity to undertake further reassessment either due to having failed a module, or accepted extenuating circumstances.

Please note, if you have failed any credits, these will appear on your Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR). You may therefore wish to return to undertake reassessment to turn failed marks into passes or, where you have been offered voluntary reassessment on the basis of accepted extenuating circumstances, to improve your marks.

Before choosing to undertake further reassessment after graduating, it is important to consider how much of an impact raising your module mark is likely to have on your overall degree mark and classification. In some cases, raising a module aggregate may result in a better degree classification – but in most cases it will not affect the overall classification.

Please talk to staff in your department about the effect undertaking reassessment may have on your degree outcome, and read the useful points to consider below:

  • reassessment is usually offered as a resit, except in the case of accepted extenuating circumstances, and so will be capped at 40
  • you don’t have to take this reassessment if you don’t want to, you have already achieved your full honours degree
  • this reassessment will take place over the Summer. If you previously achieved a higher mark, this will be reinstated
  • you cannot be reassessed in any modules that you failed in previous years of study, only reassessment in your modules undertaken in your Final Year will be granted
  • the Board of Examiners will meet in September 2023 to consider your reassessment marks. Once your results have been released and ratified, your HEAR will be updated and, if your degree classification changes, a new degree certificate will be sent to you
  • if you are a Law student on a Qualifying Law degree you should also read the specific advice on the implications for your award

Implications for Graduation

If you select this outcome, you will still be eligible to attend Graduation this Summer, however you will not be invited to a future Graduation ceremony if you attend now, even where your reassessment leads to an improvement in your Degree Classification.

We are pleased to confirm that we are running Summer Graduation ceremonies as planned this July. These ceremonies will take place between Monday 17 and Friday 21 July.

All expected graduates have been contacted with information about when their ceremony will be and how to book. Please ensure your external email address is up to date in MyEssex so we can stay in touch. All updates will also be published on our Graduation website. Please contact should you have any queries in the meantime.

Receiving your award documents

Your electronic award certificate will be available on your GradIntelligence account, alongside your HEAR, within five working days of your award being conferred. If you have been given a choice of outcomes, this will be available five working days after you have confirmed your decision.

You will also receive a hard copy award certificate which will be provided at your Graduation ceremony. If you do not attend Graduation, the Graduation and Awards Team will contact you via your Essex email after the ceremonies have taken place to confirm where your certificate should be posted. If you do not confirm your address by the deadline stated by the Graduation and Awards Team when they contact you, your Certificate will be posted to your home address on MyEssex.

If after your reassessment, your degree classification improves, you will be issued with a new certificate which will be sent to you after the September Boards have taken place.

Please contact if you require further assistance.

Academic transcript

Your academic transcript will be available electronically as part of your Higher Education Achievement Record (HEAR) within five working days. If you have been given a choice of outcomes, your HEAR will not updated until five working days after your have confirmed your choice.

You can access your HEAR and securely share it with others via your GradIntelligence account. We no longer issue hard copies of students' transcripts as standard.

Please contact should you require further assistance.

Before selecting this outcome, we urge all students to read the important information below:
