Career mentoring programme

We know that as a University of Essex student you have a curiosity about the world, questions about your future and ideas to explore.

Having someone to talk to from outside of your circle of friends and family, someone who understands where you’re coming from but is not impacted by your future decisions, can really help to clarify your plans and how you approach life after University.  Enter the Career Mentoring Programme!

Mentor Connections: Our newest addition, Mentor Connections is exclusively for postgraduate students graduating this academic year. The programme takes place during the summer and provides you 1-to-1 access to one of our career mentors over a three-month period.

6-month Career Mentoring: Our full mentoring programme offers an average of one hour per month 1-to-1 support from a career mentor over a six-month period. Preparation takes place during the summer term with mentoring relationships due to commence in the Autumn term.

Our Essex mentors are there to not only share their industry expertise but to empower you. To listen, to talk through your plans, fears, and aspirations, and give you the time and space you need to make decisions that are right for you.

Whatever your year, level, or discipline of study, provided you are registered as a student for the duration of the programme and think you could benefit from this unique opportunity, we want to hear from you!

  • 6-month Career Mentoring: Applications are now closed for 21/22 and will reopen in Spring 2023
  • Mentor Connections: Postgrads only, applications are now closed for 21/22 and will reopen in Spring 2023

For more information, read on and book into one of our virtual Career Mentoring Information Sessions via CareerHub, or check out our online briefing video.

NB: The Career Mentoring Programme grows in popularity each year and spaces are limited, so please only apply if you are motivated and able to commit to the programme.

A panel will review all applications once the deadline has passed, after which you will be informed of the outcome via email.  If for any reason your application is unsuccessful, you will be invited to a feedback session with information on other opportunities that may be more relevant to your needs.

About the programme

Who are our mentors?

The Essex mentors are alumni, staff, and local business professionals from all walks of life, and they all volunteer their time to support your development. Some are based overseas; others are very local. They cover a huge range of sectors and professions including Law, Business, Entrepreneurship, Translation, Human Rights, Psychology, Biological Sciences, Computer Sciences, Teaching, Academia, Health and Social Care, Film Making, and the list goes on.

They each have something different to offer and we do everything in our power to find the right mentor for your individual needs, interests, and aspirations.

If accepted onto the programme you will have the opportunity to view our mentor profiles and help us find the best match for you. If that person isn’t already on our database, fear not, we will do our upmost to find them for you.

How does it work?

The general Career Mentoring programme provides a minimum of 6 hours contact with an experienced professional for one-to-one guidance, support, and career coaching over a 6-month period starting in the Autumn term.

We also have a shorter version of the programme known as Mentor Connections which is exclusively for our postgraduate students to connect with a mentor during the summer of their graduating year.

Both programmes open for applications during the Spring Term and offer an exclusive opportunity to:

  • tap into the talent that’s gone before you
  • share your mentor’s knowledge and experience
  • build your professional network
  • be challenged to realise your true potential

Each mentoring relationships is unique but one thing they all have in common, is that you choose the direction they take. You’re in the driving seat.

Your mentor can help you answer all kinds of questions relating to your future. Here are just a few of the reasons people have taken advantage of this amazing opportunity:

  • Learn more about a specific career or industry
  • Explore your ideas, values, and future possibilities
  • Gain insight from someone who has faced similar challenges or concerns about the transition from university to the working world
  • Uncover and gain confidence in your strengths and how to articulate them
  • Develop your professional skills and commercial awareness

There are no right or wrong reasons to have a mentor, just opportunities for growth.

What does it take?

As with all great opportunities, the more you give, the more you get. Put in the effort and commitment with your mentor and you will reap the benefits.

If your application is successful you be invited to attend a compulsory training session before you get started to ensure you get the very best from the programme.
