Sitecore: the basics

Logging in

  • Log in address: copy this address into your browser isswin217.essex.ac.uk/sitecore
  • Username and password: this is given to you after you've completed your web author training. Note that is not your Essex username and password.

You can change your password from the Control Panel option accessed from the Sitecore dashboard.

Troubleshooting

  • If the Sitecore web page doesn't load in your browser, ensure that you are using VPN or remote desktop.
  • If you've forgotten or lost your username and password, contact us. The forgotten password function from the Sitecore homepage can't be used.

For any Sitecore issues contact us at wedm@essex.ac.uk

Locking and unlocking

Any item in Sitecore, whether it's a page, image, module or other item, needs to be locked before you can edit it. This means that no-one else can edit it while it's locked to you.

It's important to remember, once you've finished editing your item, you need to unlock it so that it can be accessed by others.

  1. Go to the 'Review' tab at the top of the page
  2. Select 'My items' - you'll see all the items you've got locked out
  3. Select 'Unlock all'

Viewing a draft page

How to view your draft web page content:

  1. In the top, very right-hand side of Chrome, select the three vertical dots icon
  2. Select ‘New incognito window’
  3. Copy isswin217.essex.ac.uk and paste it into the browser.
  4. At the end of the url add the page url you wish to view (you need to be connected to VPN, remote desktop or on campus to view it)
  5. Not everyone can see these draft pages, so if you need to send the link to someone, contact us and we’ll set that person up with the correct permission to view the page. This only applies to staff working from home. If they’re on campus, connected to the main University network, they don’t need any special permissions.

Publishing

Once your edits have been completed, please contact your Faculty Web and Promotions Assistant if you're in an academic department or wedm@essex.ac.uk if you're in a Professional Services team who will publish your changes. Mention any documents that also need to be published.

We all aim for the highest standards on the website which is why we only allow a few members of each team to edit the site and even fewer to publish. For any queries related to publishing permissions, contact wedm@essex.ac.uk.

Editing staff pages

The academic and support staff pages are created automatically by pulling in the information from databases. The web pages can’t be edited. Academics can update their staff profile via their profile information in the RIS system or using the Staff Profile Builder if they are a member of Professional Services.
