Biography

Stefanie Reissner, PhD, is Professor of Work and Organization Studies at Essex Business School. Prior to joining Essex Business School in 2022, she worked - for a total of 18 years - at Newcastle University Business School, Sunderland Business School, and Bristol Business School contributing to research, teaching, and academic leadership. Stefanie is an elected member of British Academy of Management (BAM) Council where she is working on the Research & Publications Sub-Committee in her second term of office. She has recently taken the role of BAM Chair of Research Grants, in which she has strategic oversight of the research grant portfolio of the British Academy of Management and partners. Moreover, Stefanie is a Fellow of the British Academy of Management Peer Review College, serves on the Economic and Social Research Council's Peer Review College, and reviews research grants for the Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland. Stefanie’s research interests are identity, narrative / storytelling, and interpretive work / sensemaking. She is further interested in research methodology (particularly qualitative interviewing), reflexivity, and learning. Stefanie has received funding by ESRC, British Academy / Leverhulme Trust, British Academy of Management, and Council for International Veterinary Medical Education. Her work has been published in major journals, such as Work, Employment & Society, Public Administration, Journal of Business Ethics, European Management Review, International Journal of Human Resource Management, Culture & Organization, Qualitative Research in Organizations and Management, and Journal of Organizational Change Management as well as in two research monographs. Stefanie is co-editor (with Ingo Winkler and Rosalia Cascon) of the Handbook of Research Methods for Studying Identity: Usual Suspects and Beyond, to be published by Edward Elgar in 2023. Stefanie is further a committed management educator and co-author of the best-selling textbook Developing Skills for Business Leadership, of which a completely revised third edition is due to be published in 2023 by Kogan Page. She has been actively involved in doctoral training through invited keynote speeches at doctoral symposia, research methods workshops for the Northern Advanced Research Training Initiative, and mentoring as part of the British Academy of Management’s doctoral symposium.
