Biography
Dr Jaime Lindsey joined Essex Law School as a lecturer in September 2017 and was promoted to senior lecturer in 2021. Her primary expertise is in healthcare law, specifically mental capacity law and the Court of Protection. Jaime is currently researching the use of mediation in the Court of Protection and in medical treatment disputes involving adults and children. Jaime also researches the intersection between mental capacity and adult safeguarding law, more specifically legal responses to domestic abuse of disabled adults, arguing that the law of adult safeguarding should focus on the perpetrators of abuse rather than restricting the adult vulnerable to abuse. Jaime is interested in healthcare law more broadly, including clinical negligence, the law on assisted reproduction and professional regulation of healthcare. Jaime has used empirical socio-legal methods and vulnerability theory to explore these areas. Jaime completed her PhD at the University of Birmingham for which she undertook empirical socio-legal research to investigate the balance between protection and empowerment of vulnerable adults in mental capacity law. She previously qualified as a solicitor at a leading healthcare law firm in London and worked as a solicitor at the British Dental Association. Jaime has taught at the University of Birmingham and UCL and in Spring 2020 was a Visiting Academic at the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, University of Oxford. She is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Jaime welcomes approaches from prospective PhD students for supervision in any of her areas of expertise. In particular, she would be interested in supervising projects with an empirical or socio-legal methodological approach and in areas including mental capacity law, access to justice (particularly in the Court of Protection), civil law responses to domestic abuse, adult safeguarding and clinical negligence.
