Welcome to Essex, a home for those who are impatient to make a difference in the world.
At Essex we're impatient for change, we strive to support and encourage our students and staff to be that change in the world that we believe in, and our on-campus and in-person Open Day is a chance for you to get a taste of what life at Essex could be like. Think meeting world-class academics and like-minded students. Think family. Think home and where you could live. Think taster lectures. Think making a change. Think art. Think music. Think tea and treats. Think you know open days? Think again.
Once you’ve booked your place we'll send you a confirmation email with more information on what to expect at our on-campus Open Day. No need to print the confirmation email as we'll have your details at our check in desks on the day – simple!
Our jam-packed accessible Open Day Programme (.pdf) is now available to download to your device. Check it out before the event to help you plan your day in advance, but don't forget to keep it handy on the day itself so that you can quickly find out what time a talk is or in which location it is taking place.
Our in-person Open Day will take place on our Colchester Campus. Our address is:
If you’re arriving by car, there will be yellow AA road signs to help guide you to Campus from main travel routes. These will lead you to Boundary Road, once there, take the second right which is the entrance to the Open Day parking area for visitors where a Traffic Officer will be hand to direct you. Once you’ve parked, follow ‘Open Day Check-In’ signs which will guide you to the Essex Sport Arena; the main venue for the Open Day. Parking is free for all Open Day attendees.
If you’re arriving by train, we have 3 train stations in Colchester: Colchester Town, Colchester Hythe and Colchester North Station (also referred to as Colchester Main Station). Colchester North Station is the largest and has the best bus and taxi links so we recommend using this station. There is a taxi rank and bus stop at the station. The following buses will lead you to campus:
We’ve created a collection of short, accessible videos to help you find your way around campus on the Open Day, highlighting step-free access routes, areas where you might expect a high volume of visitors or noise, as well as ‘quiet spaces’ on campus where you can take some time away from the event if needed.
If you or your guests have any special requirements, please email us in advance so we can make sure your visit is as smooth as possible. We want to ensure you feel welcomed and comfortable throughout your visit. Our Open Day can be very busy, which we appreciate can be overwhelmed for some of our visitors. We therefore run an early check-in from 8-9am to allow for calmer start to the event. To book an early check-in spot and find out more, please feel free to contact us.
We will also have quiet spaces in our Square 5 Building and Essex Sport Arena which will be live streaming the general talks which take place in the ICLH Auditorium. Please note that due to circumstances outside of our control, we were required to move one of our quiet spaces from the Lakeview Room to the Square 5 Building at late notice. As such, our programme and Open Day map do not reflect the location of one of our quiet rooms – please bear this in mind, and we apologise for any inconvenience this causes.
The University is set across various levels, so please check out our Access Guide for further information or step-free routes around campus. Staff and Student Ambassadors will also be based in all main areas to assist you on the Open Day.
Toilets will based located in all main venues and gender-neutral toilets can be found in our Students’ Union on Square 3.
We want to make sure you have the best Open Day so if you have any questions about your visit or need any information ahead of the day please feel free to contact us.
