Other ways you can give to Essex

Give your time

By giving your time and expertise, you can support Essex in a number of ways, including:

  • Providing internships.
  • mentoring students.
  • Taking part in our networking events for students and professionals in their future industry.
  • Supporting our employability and entrepreneurship programmes for students.

For more information, email the Alumni Relations team at or
call 01206 873412.

Give through your payroll

You can sign-up or amend a donation from your monthly pay via the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF). The donation comes out pre-tax, so is a really efficient way for you to donate.

Leave a gift in your will

Remembering Essex in your will is a straightforward process. Any gift simply needs to be included in your will or attached to an existing will as a codicil. You can leave money or assets like books, property, shares or works of art to the University – or even a proportion of your estate.

The University is an exempt charity, which means leaving us a gift in your will is entirely free of tax, including Inheritance Tax and Capital Gains Tax. Also, if you decide to leave more than 10% of your estate to charity, there will be less tax to pay on any non-charitable bequests.

Information about your donation

Our approach to fundraising

We will:

  • always be clear about how much money we need and exactly how it will be spent;
  • only contact you as often as you are comfortable with, and only in a way you are happy with (e.g. post, telephone or email); and
  • be accountable, disclosing revenue and expenses in our financial reports.

We will not:

  • sell or share your details with anyone;
  • accept money obtained through criminal activity or tax evasion; or
  • accept donations where the terms will restrict academic freedom.

Tax-efficient giving

Gift Aid

You can make your gift go further if you're eligible for Gift Aid. With Gift Aid, the Government boosts your gift by 25% at no cost to you. For every £1 you donate, the Government will add 25p in reclaimed tax, therefore a £100 gift is worth £125 to us.

In order for gifts to be eligible for Gift Aid, you must be a UK taxpayer who will have paid an amount of income tax and/or capital gains tax at least equal to the tax that the University will reclaim on your gifts in the tax year in which they are made.

Donate shares

Shares donated to the University of Essex are free of Capital Gains Tax and their market value can be offset against your income tax liability. Tax on any associated costs (such as brokers' fees) can also be claimed back. Every £1,000 gift of shares donated to the University of Essex will reduce your effective taxable income for that year by £1,000.

We can help you complete a stock transfer to the University of Essex. Please email if you need help with this.
