Research degrees

We offer postgraduate research degrees in a variety of areas including physiotherapy, health and physical activity, sport and exercise medicine, and sports therapy.

Our degree types range from a one year Masters of Science by Dissertation (MSD), through to a three year PhD. Individual course listings will specify if part-time study is available. You can use our academic profiles to find a potential supervisor and discuss potential titles with them before making an application.

We advertise studentships for MSD and PhDs throughout the year. These give you a pre-approved title and supervisor, ideal if you have an area of interest but are unsure about coming up with a project or finding a supervisor.

If you want to enhance your professional skills without committing to a research degree you can also check out our Continuing Professional Development options.

I'm grateful for the possibilities that were offered by the School to travel to scientific conferences, and to work as a Graduate Laboratory Assistant in a multitude of undergraduate modules. These experiences will undoubtedly be a great asset in my prospective career as a lecturer in Sports Science.

Professional Doctorates

Our Professional Doctorates are specialist qualifications that integrate professional expertise and academic rigour. It is appropriate if you are in, or are aspiring to, a senior professional appointment in practice, education or management in a sport or rehabilitation related discipline. It demonstrates your ability to perform at the level of 'expert' within your area of specialist practice.

Our portfolio of Professional Doctorates fall under four areas:

  • Physiotherapy
  • Sports Therapy
  • Sport and Exercise Science
  • Sport Performance and Coaching

Our carefully crafted programme consists of three elements:

Taught modules

Having a good grounding in research methods is key to success in this course, so throughout the programme we've woven in opportunities to develop your existing knowledge. In doing so, you will have the opportunity to complete modules across departments.

Work based learning

At the end of both your first and second year, you will be required to submit a portfolio of learning. These two portfolios will record the development of expert practice, and are constructed from the specialist application of generic outcomes in areas such as risk and diagnostic reasoning.

Original research through doctoral level dissertation

You will undertake a dissertation on a subject relevant to your specialist area of practice
