Breaking down barriers to learning

If you're a European student and want to study at university, but do not have the standard qualifications required to enter the first year of our undergraduate courses, then studying one of our foundation year courses is a perfect opportunity.

A foundation year (which is also known as 'Year 0') allows you to go to university by preparing you academically. If you successfully complete your foundation year, you're guaranteed a place on your chosen degree.

You will study new and fascinating subjects in ways that may be different from those you are used to in school or college. Studying a foundation year before entering your degree course will help prepare you for that change.

We work closely with other departments and schools, and our aim is to equip you with the necessary knowledge and academic skills to succeed in your future studies.

So, what do we have to offer?

Foundation year study

Many Essex degrees can include a foundation year. At Essex, these are known as Year 0 and are taught in our Essex Pathways department. On successful progression, you will move into your chosen subjects department.

Whilst studying a foundation year, you will improve your academic skills and subject-specific knowledge, and become fully prepared for undergraduate study and life at university. You will study modules relevant to your chosen degree, along with academic skills modules that enable you to succeed at undergraduate level.

A gateway to your undergraduate degree

Successful completion of your foundation Year guarantees you entry to the first year of your undergraduate degree course.

Membership to an international community

You are an Essex student from day one, a member of our global community based at one of the most international universities in the world. From the very first moment you arrive, you will feel part of our community and have access to all the facilities our campus has to offer.

Kasey Adu-Poku
“My experience during my foundation year in Computer Science has been a blessing. I have studied Computer Science since I was 16; however, I decided to take the route of the Essex Pathways department because I wanted to improve my academic style of writing. I think if I had not taken a foundation year, I would have struggled to reach my full potential. Year 0 has enabled me to improve my academic writing skills, it has increased my confidence in public speaking and it has taught me the fundamental skills I need for my undergraduate degree.”
