Why choose Essex: why choose the East 15, Loughton Campus

One of the UK's most innovative acting schools, East 15 has trained actors, directors, producers and theatre technicians for stage, TV, film and radio for over 40 years. On 1 September 2000, East 15 Acting School became part of the University of Essex. East 15 Acting School offers two locations for the study of the creative arts in Loughton and in Southend-on-Sea.

The Loughton Campus comprises three sites, Hatfields, Roding House and the Technical Unit. Each site is just a five-minute walk from the nearest London Underground tube, Debden, which is on the Central Line and only 30 minutes from Liverpool Street.

The Loughton Campus is close to historic Epping Forest. A popular location, it offers some 6,000 acres of natural woodland and is ideal for walking, running, cycling or horse riding. Loughton town centre provides a rich mix of shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants. Facilities on campus include large rehearsal spaces, a radio studio, an extensive costume department, props workshop and the Corbett Theatre.

The Southend Campus includes The Gateway Building, a modern, state-of-the-art building, on the town's High Street and adjacent to the train station, with journey times to central London taking just 50 minutes.

The Gateway Building provides fully equipped rehearsal rooms and studios with panoramic views across Southend-on-Sea. There are also seminar rooms and computer labs with media production resources and facilities under development. The Clifftown Studios, a magnificent former church in the heart of Southend's conservation area, offers a variety of unique spaces for rehearsal, technical and practical work.

What is the aim of East 15 Acting School?

The School offers an exceptional standard of professional training for those wishing to enter theatre, film, TV and radio, and associated fields. East 15's philosophy is based on the work begun in Joan Littlewood's famed Theatre Workshop. The School is international in its outlook, regarding itself as a bridge between the best of British and worldwide performance traditions.

East 15 has produced actors, directors, writers, technicians and teachers of the highest calibre, all armed with the skills to find their place in the theatre profession, but also filled with inspiration and courage to search for and create exciting new work.
