Cost of living

Whether you are an undergraduate or postgraduate student, we provide you with all the information you need in order to think about the cost of living while studying with us.

Undergraduate

Based on the experiences of our students, we believe that an undergraduate studying at one of our campuses, living in a single campus room, will need between £6,900 and £9,000 for a 39-week course. An estimate of living costs for an Essex undergraduate living in a single room on campus is provided in the table below.

Living cost Per 39 weeks
Accommodation (single campus room) £2,720 to £4,847
Food (@ £50 per week) £1,911
Books and stationery £450
Clothing, toiletries etc. £475
Local travel £300
Leisure £750
Miscellaneous £250
Total £6,895 to £9,022
Average £7958

Postgraduate

Taught Masters and research degrees require attendance on campus for 50 weeks of the year, so the living costs will be higher if you are a postgraduate at Essex. As a postgraduate student living on our University campus for a 50-week academic year, you will need between £8,600 and £11,300 to cover living expenses. An estimate of living costs for an Essex postgraduate living in a single room on campus is provided in the table below.

Living cost Per 50 weeks
Accommodation (single campus room) £3,510 to £6,254
Food (@ £50 per week) £2,500
Books and stationery £600
Clothing, toiletries etc . £600
Local travel £400
Leisure £600
Miscellaneous £350
Total £8,560 to £11,304
Average £9,932

Dependants

For applicants accompanied by dependants, the cost of living will be considerably higher depending on the choice of accommodation, size of family and individual requirements.

Student visas

For students who will require a student visa the UK Border Agency is currently quoting £800 per month (or £7,200 for nine months) for living expenses in the UK and therefore student visa applicants will be required to show availability of this level of funds in making a visa application.

Please note that this amount is for single students. If you have a spouse and/or dependants you will need to provide evidence of further income.

International students

International students can also check out the International Student Calculator.
