Sports at Essex

Studying at the University of Essex opens up lots of opportunities for taking part in sport – whether it’s joining a team to play your favourite sport or trying something completely new.

Sports Centre

The Sports Centre and its surrounding playing fields are located across 40 rolling acres of Wivenhoe Park, Colchester Campus. It offers extensive indoor and outdoor sports facilities – including a brand new £1.4 million state-of-the-art gym (which opened in July 2010) with state-of-the-art fitness technology in light, spacious air-conditioned comfort, fitness studios.

Outdoor sport

There’s a large sports hall, squash courts, tennis courts, a climbing wall, and the full range of outdoor all weather courts and pitches – for cricket, football, hockey and rugby - a frisbee golf course, artificial cricket wicket and nets, floodlit grass training area, floodlit synthetic turf pitch and jogging and orienteering routes around the campus. Our water sports clubs have a clubhouse at nearby town Brightlingsea and the sub-aqua and swimming clubs use the swimming pool at Colchester Leisure World.

Southend sport

At the Southend Campus, seven miles of glorious coastline offer a wealth of water sports options from sailing to kite-surfing, and the Southend Marine Activities Centre allows those on a budget to try their hand at a variety of water sports.
