Faculties

The University's academic structure consists of four Faculties that bring departments together to work collaboratively on research and teaching to deliver the University's academic strategy.

Academic departments

Within the four Faculties the University has eighteen academic departments. All are strongly student focused in their teaching, providing the resources, facilities and opportunities to empower students to succeed. They are also committed to research and in national research assessments Essex has consistently been placed amongst the top universities in the country, with many departments achieving the highest rating.

Centres, institutes and research groups

In addition to the academic departments, the University has established a number of centres and institutes to bring together those having a common interest in a particular subject area and to provide a focus for research. These include five major data resource centres (History Data Service, Data Archive, European Centre for Analysis in the Social Sciences (ECASS), Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER), and ESDS Qualidata) offering access to social science and historical data resources for research and teaching.

* Research students may be admitted directly to these centres.
