Why Study Mathematics?

The attraction of mathematics is that it is a discipline where precise propositions lead, through elegant arguments, to far-reaching consequences. Mathematics has been described as the "queen of the sciences" — but that does it a disservice: mathematics underpins not only the physical and biological sciences, but also the social sciences. For many, it is the way in which mathematics interacts with so many other subjects, that is its prime attraction.

Mathematics at Essex

A graduate with a good mathematical training is a valuable addition in a wide range of occupations. Accountancy, banking and computer programming might be the A, B and C of professions where mathematical training helps, but there are countless other areas, ranging from environmental science to market research, and from finance to sports science, in which mathematical knowledge is vital. The central role of mathematics, servicing the needs of other disciplines, is reflected in the courses on offer at Essex. As a consequence of the research interests of the staff, there is an emphasis on the applications of mathematics, with joint degree schemes involving both social science (accounting, economics, finance and management) and science (computing). Mathematics at Essex is therefore primarily for the student looking to learn a subject that will be useful in a later career. However, the emphasis on applications should not be taken as a sign that mathematics cannot be studied for its own sake — the BSc Mathematics degree has always been our most popular degree.
