research-led teaching: an introduction

A research project to determine the beneficial links between research and teaching was led by Dr Lindsay Aspinwall in 2007 and was funded by the Higher Education Academy (HEA).  It aimed to identify and evaluate the existing and potential relationships between research and teaching in the science and engineering departments at Essex.

Both staff and student perspectives on the value of incorporating research into undergraduate and postgraduate programmes were obtained, with a view to enhancing the student learning experience and promoting research-related graduate attributes, boosting employability.

The nature of the research-teaching relationship and its potential benefits for students, staff and the higher education sector, is currently being debated at national and international level, and this project, once the report has been published by the HEA in March 2008, hopes to make a significant contribution to the debate.
