Conferences provide
valuable opportunities to disseminate research findings – and to develop
one’s academic career. However, they can also be daunting. And,
let’s be honest, poor presentations are not exactly uncommon. This
course is designed to help you to approach presentations in a professional manner and
to make the
most of presenting opportunities.
This is a practical course.
It will take a three-step approach, covering what to do before, during, and
after your presentation.
Before the presentation:
how to get started
(deciding which events to target, what your objectives are, and how to
submit a proposal and/or abstract);
how to ‘build in’
success by tailoring the paper for the event and preparing thoroughly
and professionally.
Giving the presentation.
This will form the
core of the course. We will focus on the use of practical presentation
skills, including the presentation of scientific data, and on dealing with
questions and discussion.
After the presentation:
reviewing and
evaluating your presentation;
developing your work
further (following up through networking; publishing papers; moving on
to the next one).
We’ll establish a list of
dos and don’ts and look at some of the resources you can use to develop your
approach further.
