Your help is required
This is
the page on which we attempt to take you on a guilt-trip. The library does not
have any paid staff, which means that volunteers have to run it. Yes, this does
take up a person's time but when the librarians see all the happy little faces
of the people who use the library, it makes it all worthwhile! This page
outlines the difficulties the library faces and the ways in which you can help
reduce these problems.
The library classification system
You can see on the
classification page that there is still a long way to go before the books
are all classified correctly. There is a lot of work to be done here and this is
definitely a case of many hands make light work. Can you spare an hour or two a
week to help get this job done? Think of the sense of achievement you would have
when it is all complete.
The catalogue
The current catalogue is unsatisfactory. It is on paper and
lacks a subject index. The possibility of an online catalogue is being
investigated by the librarians. If you have any experience in implementing this
sort of system, please help!
Stock
A lot of the
stock is over
ten years old now and the library would like to be as up-to-date as possible.
This is where your unused and unneeded books come in useful. You will know they
are going to a good home, after serving you well (or not so well) for so long.
Any linguistics or language-teaching books are gratefully received (and queued
for classification). You will get fame and recognition for your trouble. PhD,
MPhil and MA theses all welcome too - why not share your hard work with others?
Opening hours
The opening hours are limited. If you joined the team of
librarians, you could help the library stay open for longer and more often.
Librarians must give up their time for free, but it gives you the opportunity to
catch up with the gossip!
If you can help
If you decide you want to help, either
visit during opening hours or send an email to the
