Visiting for Postgraduate Study Without Taking an MA or PhD

Students walking on campusWe have four ways in which Language and Linguistics can welcome visitors wishing to study at Essex at postgraduate level but without registering for one of our standard MA or PhD programmes. All enquiries should be addressed in the first place to the Graduate Administrator (email: laladmin@essex.ac.uk), NOT individual members of staff.

Joint Research Project

If you have planned a joint research project with a member of staff here, then you and your co-researcher here first need to write a joint proposal and submit it with your CV for approval in the first place by the Departmental Research Strategy Committee. If that is successful you will normally be invited by the University to come as what we call a Visiting Fellow or Visiting Professor. Note that our staff only collaborate in this way with people they already know (often ex-students of Essex) on projects central to their interests. This includes those wishing to pursue postdoc study in the Department.

Erasmus/Socrates Programme

If your university has a special agreement with Essex via Erasmus or a similar organisation, you can be registered by the University under this arrangement to attend particular modules and/or get supervision, subject to a supervisor being available. See http://www.essex.ac.uk/socrates/incoming/applications.htm

Occasional Research Student

If you want to come primarily to do some supervised research (e.g. as part of a PhD you are pursuing at another institution), you can apply to do this, describing your research project. You would need a supervisor here to be interested in your project and agree to supervise, and you would register and pay set fees for use of library facilities and per hour for supervision. We cannot supply office space unfortunately. See http://www.essex.ac.uk/academic/docs/fees/fees.htm

In order to apply, please download and complete the attached application form. Together with the completed application form, you need to e-mail the Graduate Administrator the following documents:

  • Your CV
  • Your BA graduation certificate
  • Your BA academic transcript
  • Your MA graduation certificate
  • Your MA academic transcript
  • Two academic references

Occasional Taught Student

If you want to come primarily to use the library and attend some taught modules (e.g. as part of study leave from another institution), you can apply to do this. You would register and pay set fees for use of facilities and for each module attended. Note that our taught modules are available October to December and January to March.
