MA in Teaching English as a Foreign Language

This course provides a professional English teaching programme for those with little or no experience in the field. It delivers vocationally relevant training both in the practical and academic spheres, and gives students the chance to gain practical expertise in key teaching methods and techniques as well as a systematic understanding of recent theory, research findings and issues in language teaching, language learning, applied linguistics, and related fields.

MA in Computer Assisted Language Learning

Programme Director: Dr. Adela Ganem

This course provides a sound theoretical foundation in applied linguistics for language teaching, as well as practical experience both of locating resources and of creating them. The course focuses on CALL as an object of inquiry through critical discussion of current research, and on developing the necessary skills for students to implement their own research projects.

MA in English for Specific Purposes

This course provides students with knowledge and skills regarding the historical and theoretical foundations of ESP, the critical evaluation of syllabuses and materials in a variety of language teaching/learning contexts, written and spoken discourse in ESP, language learning strategies in different academic disciples, and the development and implementation of research projects in ESP.

MA in English Language Teaching - Young Learners

This course provides a sound knowledge of classroom English Language teaching practices with young learners and familiarises students with the design of language teaching programmes aimed at developing EFL communication skills for children. The course enables students to understand the principles of literacy development, and to be able to teach reading and writing in English as a foreign language, and to implement research projects.

This course provides a theoretically-grounded introduction to contemporary work on language acquisition (acquisition of first, second or foreign languages), and explores methodologies available for investigating language acquisition from a linguistic perspective. MA in Language Testing and Programme Evaluation

This course familiarises students with current theories and developments in Language Testing within contemporary Applied Linguistics. It gives students a thorough grounding in both quantitative and qualitative approaches to the evaluation of language teaching programmes and enables them to develop skills in designing and evaluating language tests, and designing evaluation methods for language teaching programmes and projects.

MRes in Linguistics

This graduate programme provides students with the opportunity to become familiar with contemporary approaches to the study of language and to develop a critical, in-depth comprehension or one or more theoretical and/or descriptive sub-disciplines of linguistics. Students take two specific modules, one research support module, and departmental professional development training courses in each term, as well as embarking on research for their dissertation from the beginning.
