Albert Sloman Library
The Colchester Campus library is just a few minutes' walk from teaching buildings and student accommodation; giving you to access more than one million
books, periodicals and microfilms. This includes 8,000 current periodicals so you can read the latest research and articles in your subject area. We have resources
covering all subject areas to support our academic programmes. Our collections covering Latin America, Russia and Eastern Europe are of
The Library provides ideal conditions for quiet study with 1,070 reader places. In addition, 110 networked PCs and terminals provide access to over 47,000 online journals,
databases, e-books and library catalogues. Viewing facilities for DVDs and videos are also available. We aim to support teaching and research but we also have books of
general interest – just in case you need a break from your studies.
Extra copies of set texts and books we expect heavy demand for are available on a short loan collection and you can check the location of books in our University library catalogue.
Southend library services
Students at our Southend Campus can visit the Albert Sloman Library, borrow books from its collection through the daily dispatch service and use the library at South Essex College; our nearby partner
The South Essex College library gives you access to a wide range of learning resources in a pleasant and safe working environment which includes specialised collections linked to your course.
The Southend Central Library in Victoria Avenue is within
walking distance of the University.
Our special collections
Our special collections and archives cover fascinating areas of contemporary history, society and culture. This
includes the papers of the Social Democrat Party (SDP), QUALIDATA and the Boundary Commission for England and Wales. Recent additions include extensive papers relating to the
work of Sigmund Freud, the historical collection of the Royal Statistical Society Library and the Library of the Essex Society for Archaeology and History.
Long opening hours
The Albert Sloman Library has long opening hours, a total of 84 hours over seven days a week during term and 42.5 to 84 hours in vacations. A reading room provides overnight
study and IT facilities during much of the year.
South Essex College opening hours are from 8am to 9.30pm on Mondays to Thursdays, with a 5pm closure on Fridays and 9am to 1pm opening on Saturdays.
