English language requirements

If English is not your first language, we ask you to provide evidence of your ability to understand and express yourself in English for academic purposes, ensuring that you fully benefit from your studies. There is support alongside your studies but we require a certain level before you arrive.

Students from the United States whose first language is English will not be required to take a Secure English Language Test for entry to Essex, but will be required to achieve a certain mark in English in their high school qualification in order to meet our English language requirement which applies to all students.

If you have not taken an English language test yet, or do not have a current valid test score, you can still apply for courses with us as we are able to make conditional offers which will be dependent on you meeting our language requirements.

The most common test for language proficiency is IELTS. However we also accept some other English language qualifications, and we may be able to accept your high school qualification. For further information on the tests and levels we accept, please refer to the information below:

High School English language qualifications

Information about the High School English language qualifications that we accept can be found on our Course Finder . If information is not being displayed for your country, please contact the Undergraduate Admissions Office (admit@essex.ac.uk or +44(0)1206 873666) and we will be able to let you know whether your current English language qualification is acceptable.

If you are a Tier 4 applicant who is a national of a majority English speaking country (as defined by the UK Home Office), and your first language is English, it is likely that we will be able to accept your current English high school qualification. Again, please contact the Undergraduate Admissions Office for more information.

Postgraduate applicants

Requirements for postgraduate students

If you have successfully completed university-level studies in English in a majority English-speaking country, you will not normally be asked for additional evidence of proficiency. If you have any questions about the acceptability of your English language qualification then please contact the Graduate Admissions Office (pgquery@essex.ac.uk or +44 (0)1206 873473).

If you require a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK, please visit our Immigration webpages for further information about the UK Home Office’s English language requirements.

Improving your English language skills

If you have not achieved the English language requirement for your degree but you do have a good score, you may be eligible to take a short pre-sessional English programme from between 5-15 weeks. This can help you meet the conditions of your offer without having to take another IELTS test.
