Courses and entry requirements

With students from over 130 countries we have experience working with international qualifications and hope these pages provide information on entry requirements that we accept. If the course you are studying or have studied is not listed here please contact the Undergraduate Admissions office by e-mail at admit (non-Essex users should add @essex.ac.uk to create full e-mail address) or by phone, +44(0)1206 873666.

Please note that non-native English speakers are also required to meet the University’s English Language Entry Requirements.

Pathway courses

Our International Academy offer foundation programmes, four-year degrees and International Diplomas in Business with successful completion leading to progression to Year 1 or Year 2 of undergraduate courses at the University. We also offer Pre-Master programmes that allow progression to a number of postgraduate courses.

We also offer Pre-Sessional English courses if you need to improve your language skills to meet our English Language entry requirements.

Undergraduate

If you are studying A-levels or the International Baccalaureate Diploma, our entry requirements are published in the Undergraduate Prospectus and on the University’s online Course Finder.

We recognise the following qualifications from USA:
  • High School Graduation Diploma with GPA of 3.0 plus ACTs (American College Testing)
  • High School Graduation Diploma with GPA of 3.0 plus SATs (Scholastic Aptitude Tests – either SATR or SAT subject tests).
  • High School Graduation Diploma 3.0 plus APs/APTs (Advanced Placement Tests).
  • Associate Degree/Professional Diploma and USA Bachelor degree.

We also accept recognised foundation programmes for entry to the University. For advice on whether we would accept the foundation programme you have taken or are taking, and the level that would be required, please contact the Undergraduate Admissions office.

Postgraduate taught

Applicants should have a good Bachelor’s degree from a recognised institution, preferably with at least an upper second class or a very good lower second class degree. Some, but not all, courses require for that first degree to be in a related field. Applicants should check with the Department to which they wish to apply.

Postgraduate research

Applicants should have already completed a first degree with good grades and should also demonstrate both an interest in and understanding of the area in which they propose to carry out research. Some Departments may ask for applicants to have also completed a Masters degree, while others may be able to offer a Doctoral programme in place of this. Applicants should check with the Department to which they wish to apply.
