Essex Business School

The Essex MBA

University of Essex

MBA entry requirements

Academic entry requirements

You will need to have achieved a 2:2 or above in your Bachelor degree or equivalent, in any subject area.  You will also require three years relevant professional work experience post graduation.

We will also consider an application from you if you do not meet these entry requirements, however you would need five years of relevant managerial experience. You will also be required to provide additional documentation of an essay (2000 words) outlining a range of business situations which you have experienced and identified what you have learnt from them.

You will need to evidence your work experience through your CV and employer references.

Supporting Documentation

  • An official transcript of the results of your undergraduate qualifications, in English or a certified translation.
  • A personal statement (500 words) outlining why you would like to undertake the Essex MBA and what you hope to gain from it.
  • An up-to-date CV.
  • Two references. The second reference can be an academic reference or a reference from a previous employer.
  • If you are an international application, whose first language is not English, you must provide official certification of an English language qualification if available at the time of application.

Additional documentation

If you are required to provide the additional documentation of the 2000 word essay, when writing the essay, please consider that our admissions team will be looking at the ways in which you construct an argument, are able to reflect on your experiences, and indicate how these reflections have influenced your subsequent professional activity.

English language requirements

If English is not your first language, we ask you to provide evidence of your ability to understand and express yourself in English for academic purposes. If your score is less than two years old in an internationally recognised test, such as IELTS, TOEFL or Pearson Test of English Academic, please supply a copy when making your application.

Our IELTS requirements are 6.5 overall (6.0 in each component).

We implement the following score equivalence:

IELTS TOEFL (ibt) Pearson
6.5 88 60

We do not require a GMAT score, but this could aid your application, particularly if you do not hold a Bachelor degree at the required grade.
