Introduction

Centre for Curatorial Studies

Philosophy

The Centre for Curatorial Studies (CCS) is a research and teaching unit based within the School of Philosophy and Art History. We focus on contemporary curatorial theory and practice, and contemporary museology, and offer a full range of postgraduate curating degrees from MA to PhD, which can be studied full-time, part-time or on a modular basis.

Our School was founded in August 2011, born out of the merger of two long-standing departments at Essex - the Department of Art History and Theory and the Department of Philosophy. We offer single-discipline degrees at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in both philosophy and in art history, as well as opportunities for exploring interdisciplinary themes at the intersection of art and philosophy.

Areas of special research and teaching concentration include Renaissance studies, curatorial studies, Modernism, continental European philosophy, moral and political philosophy, phenomenology, semiotics and critical theory.

Details of our course offerings and visiting speaker series can be found on the discipline-specific websites; Philosophy at Essex and Art History at Essex.
